Lakeview International Journal of Literature and Arts (LIJLA)
Lakeview International Journal of Literature and Arts is an online journal brought out by the Writers’ Forum members of Sacred Heart College, Kochi, India.
It was a runner up (2013) and was long-listed (2016) in Saboteur Awards, London, for the Best Magazine category. Hanif Kureishi has called Lakeview "A Brilliant Journal. Truly International."
It is a biannual journal published in February and August every year. All its content is available for free online.
The editorial board of Lakeview Journal consists of Jose Varghese as its founder and Chief Editor, and Mariam Henna Naushad as its Design/Layout Editor. Aravind R Nair, Shijo Varghese, Jude Gerald Lopez, Mohammad Zahid, Minu Varghese and Collins Justine Peter are in the core editorial team. It has an international advisory board that comprises George Szirtes, Bill Ashcroft, Alan Summers, Sudeep Sen, Loree Westron, Sanjukta Dasgupta, Kala Ramesh, Mel Ulm, Patrick Connors and Rana Nayar.
Lakeview has published the work of both established and upcoming writers/artists like Hanif Kureishi , George Szirtes, Sudeep Sen, K Satchidanandan, Meena Alexander, Antonio Casella, Alan Summers, Aamer Hussein, David Frankel, Chrissie Gittins, Frank Golden, David McLoghlin, Michelle Cohen Corasanti, Alan McCormick, C.S. Jayaram, Ashley Stokes, Kirpal Gordon, Catherine McNamara, Cyril Dabydeen, Gerrard Williams, Bijay Biswal, Anil Menon, Sarah Schofield, Neil Campbell, Balbir Krishen, Alison Lock, Ken Spillman, Shanta Acharya, Abdul Salim, Ananya S Guha, Mike Keville, Indran Amirthanayagam, Sofiul Azam, Sunandan Roy Chowdhury, Michelle D'costa, Mark Mayes, Nepa Noyal, Krishna Girish, Maria Issac, Kalpana N.S., Reshma G.S., Sethu John, Naina Dey, Archana Kurup, Markus Sailor, Glenn Andrew Barr, Barry Charrman, Jonathan Taylor, Mona Dash, Rosemary Tom, Emily Bilman and so on.
Lakeview Journal is not in a position to pay its writers/artists or to provide free print copies to its contributors at the moment, because it is still an online journal running on a zero budget. The layout and design of the journal befits a print version and it can be read the same way one reads print journals. It is available for all readers across the world on issuu.com. However, due to popular demand, a few print issues are ordered occasionally, though it can be quite costly unless a bulk order of at least 101 copies can be placed. The postage to countries outside India could be high as well. The journal might start a print subscription in the future only if there is enough demand that would bring the costs down to something its readers could afford.
Our readership has been on a steady rise from the first issue because it was online and free. There are no geographical restrictions to access it. We are quite happy to continue that way, because it is quite liberating to produce some valuable content of high quality without having to worry about extra costs and space restrictions. The idea to have some print versions at this stage is purely based on the demand for the same by readers/contributors.
